Why go – can’t we serve God right here?

While it is true that God can be served just as effectively across the street as across the world, we have a biblical mandate not to confine ourselves solely to reaching out to those nearby:

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20). See also Mark 13:10; Acts 1:8, etc.

Why not just send the money?

While financial support may be necessary it is never sufficient. God has called us to deeper relationships than can be achieved by sending a check in the mail. One of the most significant aspects of these trips, from the viewpoint of the missionary, is often the encouragement received from those who come.

“I am sending him to you for the express purpose that you may know about our circumstances and that he may encourage your hearts” (Colossians 4:8). See also Acts 14:21, 22; Ephesians 6:22; 1 Thessalonians 3:2, etc.
